Klingon dyslexia
That fiction language from the Star Trek universe seems to have its uses and I’m not just talking for Star Trek conventions.
Jonathan Brown, from Milton Keynes, studied the language for 12 years and it helped him over come his dyslexia by changing the way he stored information in his brain.
Brown was in the lead writer on a series of CDs that would help people to learn Klingon, released by the Klingon Language Institute. While writing and recording the CD’s he discovered something about how he stores information.
Brown told BBC News: “Working on the translation has helped me understand where I’ve been having problems all my life with languages, I realised I’d been trying to remember the words in the name part of my brain and because I can’t remember names, I can’t remember the words.
“With the Klingon language games used on the CD, I tended to put words into a different place and it went into my long term memory.”
Now that this has been discovered, it could help change how doctors look at dyslexia and the way people with it store information, hopefully helping a lot more people over come it.
