Lewis Hamilton pays tribute to 'inspirational' British racing driver killed in IndyCar

I could see within five laps people were starting to do crazy stuff,' says fellow racer Dario Franchitti
Driver was 'frustrated' with car problems in the days before the race but promised 'pure entertainment'
Voiced concerns about the speeds cars were reaching and crowded 1.5-mile long track
Shocked Lewis Hamilton says Wheldon was an 'inspirational guy and talented driver'
Former racing driver Mark Blundell brands Las Vegas track as a 'recipe for disaster'
Tragedy: Dan Wheldon's number 77 car, far left, launches into the air after clipping a vehicle that was in front of it. Moments later Mr Wheldon smashes into the fencing to his right
The fiery pile-up, on the 11th lap of the 300-mile race, was caused by contact on Turn 2 and sucked in almost half of the race’s 34 participants.
Mr Wheldon, a former private school pupil originally from Buckinghamshire, was rushed to hospital in a helicopter but died as a result of his severe 'unsurvivable' injuries.
As the racing world today came to terms with the death, leading figures from the sport paid tribute to the 'talented and inspirational driver'.
Lewis Hamilton, who was the 2008 Formula One World Champion, said: 'This is an extremely sad day. Dan was a racer I'd followed throughout my career, as I often followed in his footsteps as we climbed the motorsport ladder in the UK.
'He was an extremely talented driver. As a British guy, who not only went over to the States but who twice won the Indy 500, he was an inspirational guy, and someone that every racing driver looked up to with respect and admiration.
'This is a tragic loss at such a young age. My heart goes out to his family and friends during this extremely difficult time.'
Jenson Button wrote on Twitter: 'Just woken up to the most horrific news. Dan Weldon RIP. I have so many good memories of racing with Dan in the early 90s, a true fighter. We've lost a legend in our sport but also a great guy.'

Questions were also being asked about the safety of the course amid speculation that Mr Wheldon was pushing himself too hard after a difficult season. He had started in last position but with offer of a $5million bonus for drivers who win from the back of the gird, had already weaved his way through ten cars before going into the back of another vehicle.
Trails of sparks could be seen across the asphalt before Mr Wheldon's car was flung into the air and struck part of the 'catch fence' outside the bend.
Debris from the cars was strewn across the track as they spun into each other and careered into the fencing. Flames then engulfed Mr Wheldon's shattered vehicle which skidded on its nose across the tarmac.
Three other drivers, including championship contender Will Power, were hurt in the pile-up.
Rescue workers were at Mr Wheldon's car quickly, some furiously waving for more help to get to the scene. A helicopter descended onto the track moments later and airlifted Mr Wheldon's body to the University Hospital in Las Vegas.
The former champion's injuries were so bad that there was little that the medics could do to save him. He was pronounced dead a short while later and officials were informed two hours after the initial crash.
Mr Wheldon Susie, and two sons, Sebastian, two, and six-month-old Oliver, are understood to have been at his bedside when he died, as well as his two brothers and a sister. His parents are believed to have witnessed their son's tragic death while watching the race on TV.

The driver had weaved his way through ten cars to place himself in a promising position close to the middle of the field in the early stages of the race. He was in a strong position to push for a victory and as a proud family man, the $5m would have been a big help to support his wife and children who had started a new life with him in the U.S.

Despite his previous success, Mr Wheldon was not a regular driver this season and accepted the offer, leading to speculation this caused him to drive faster than normal. A win would have helped to restore him to the heights of the series and helped with sponsorship. He had struggled this season with financial backing and had topped up his income with commentary work.
The race was abandoned after the tragedy and as news of Mr Wheldon's death spread there were emotional scenes track side.
Some of his colleagues and friends broke down in tears while others looked on in a stunned silence, still coming to terms with the news that the vibrant driver had gone.
IndyCar chief executive Randy Bernard confirmed Mr Wheldon’s death at a press conference.
He said: ‘IndyCar is very sad to announce that Dan Wheldon has passed away from unsurvivable injuries. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today.’
Fellow driver Dario Franchitti, Wheldon’s former teammate and friend since the age of six, said: 'I’m numb and speechless. One minute you’re joking around in driver intros and the next Dan’s gone.'
Franchitti claimed there had been warning signs of potential danger due to the number of cars in close confinement at such high speeds.
He added: 'I could see within five laps people were starting to do crazy stuff.
'I love hard racing but that to me is not really what it's about. One small mistake from somebody...
'We put so much pressure on ourselves to win races and championships, and it’s what we love to do. Days like today it doesn’t matter.
'I think everybody in the IndyCar series considered Dan a friend. He was one of those special, special people.
'He was six years old when I first met him. He was this little kid and the next thing you know he was my team-mate. '
Moments before the start of the race, popular Wheldon, a two-time winner of the famously tough Indy 500, sent his last Twitter message. It was just one word - 'Green!!!' - the colour on the lights that signals the start of the race.
Although officials had decided to end the race, after learning of his death, 19 of Mr Wheldon’s fellow drivers went on to perform a five-lap salute in his honour.
Many of them were visibly shaken and almost all of them covering their eyes with dark sunglasses after being told that their colleague's injuries were fatal.
When the drivers solemnly returned to the track, Wheldon's No. 77 was the only one on the towering scoreboard.
Franchitti sobbed uncontrollably as he got back into his car for the tribute laps.
Over speakers at the track, the song Danny Boy blared, followed by Amazing Grace as hundreds of crew workers from each team stood solemnly on the side of the course. Supporters in the stands stood up in silence for the tribute.
Television cameras captured Ashley Judd, the wife of Mr Franchitti, dabbing at her eyes shortly before the official word came.
Video replays showed Wheldon's car turning over as it was airborne and sailed into what's called the 'catch fence,' which sits over the safety barrier that's designed to give when cars make contact.
IndyCar officials also cancelled its season-ending banquet following the death. They had planned to hold a celebration for the 2011 season tonight at Mandalay Bay Resort on the Las Vegas Strip.
Today it emerged that Mr Wheldon had become 'frustrated' before the race with technical problems in the number 77 Bowers & Wilkins Magnolia/William Rast Dallara/Honda. He complained that the vehicle was 3mp off the pace but said adjustments were being carried out.
'If we start the race that far off the pace, it's going to be difficult to keep up,' he wrote on USA Today.
It's actually been a very difficult weekend for us so far. But I've been watching these guys work their tails off trying to fix this problem, and I believe they'll turn it around before Sunday's race.
'It is incredibly frustrating, both for me and them. All the boys are working as hard as possible, but so far we haven't pinpointed what it is.
'Honestly, if I can be fast enough early in the race to be able to get up there and latch onto those two, it will be pure entertainment. It's going to be a pack race, and you never know how that's going to turn out.'

IndyCar said information on a public memorial for Wheldon will be released at a later date.
Mr Wheldon is the first IndyCar driver to die on the track since rookie Paul Dana was killed in practice on the morning of race day at Homestead-Miami Speedway in 2006.
IndyCar chief executive Randy Bernard will now face tough questions on safety as analysis begins of the fatal crash.
There were suggestions that too many cars were crammed onto the course. Thirty four were competing in all, but the oval-shaped track in Las Vegas is just 60 per cent as long as races where 33 cars are used.
Former Formula One driver Mark Blundell said after the accident that the 1.5 mile long Motor Speedway track was a 'recipe for disaster'.
Martin Whitmarsh, the team principal of McLaren, said the death highlighted 'the bitter contrast that sometimes exists between the highs and lows of motorsport.' He added: 'The motorsport world is now in mourning following Dan’s passing.'
The tragedy comes just months after Mr Wheldon won the famous Indianapolis 500 in May for the second time.
Mr Wheldon, who lived in St Petersburg, Florida, won the entire IndyCar series championship back in 2005, when he also enjoyed his first triumph in the Indy500 race.
Born in Emberton, Buckinghamshire, Mr Wheldon attended the fee-paying Bedford School and started karting at the age of four.
After an early racing rivalry with contemporary and Formula One ace Jenson Button, he left the UK in 1999 for the more lucrative racing scene in the USA.
Wheldon's first Indianapolis 500 victory was in 2005 - he passed Danica Patrick with less than 10 laps to go that year - and his win at the sport's most famed race this year was one to particularly savour.
It came in perhaps the oddest of fashions, as he was the beneficiary of a huge gaffe by someone else.
Mr Wheldon was in second place, far back of rookie J.R. Hildebrand approaching the final turn - when Hildebrand lost control and clipped the wall.
He zipped past, and the only lap he led all day at Indianapolis was the last one.
He returned to the track the next morning for the traditional photo session with the winner, kissing the bricks as his two-year-old son Sebastian sat on the asphalt alongside him, and wife, Susie, held their then two-month-old, Oliver.
Mr Wheldon was almost resigned to finishing second at Indy for the third straight year, before misfortune struck Hildebrand.
'It's obviously unfortunate, but that's Indianapolis,' he said.
'That's why it's the greatest spectacle in racing. You never know what's going to happen.'
Such was the case again today.
Mr Wheldon was well behind the first wave of cars that got into trouble on the fateful lap, and had no way to avoid the wrecks in front of him.
With the incredible speeds reached by the cars, there was no time to brake or steer out of trouble.

Today's Soppy Men Act like Toddlers who Need to be Mollycoddled?

Like the original Madonna and child, the young woman on the Tube has her beloved draped around her, his head nestling on her shoulder.
As he snoozes, she texts idly with one hand, while the other absent-mindedly strokes his arm, soothingly, maternally. But this is no serene scene of mother and son — this is a couple. A couple of adults.
If you are forced to use public transport, you see them all the time. Soppy young blokes in skinny jeans, hair artfully arranged to mimic a guinea pig in a hurricane, being mollycoddled by a domineering, post-Spice Girls vixen who, if figures released last week are correct, also earns more than him.
Or perhaps he’s stroking her, as though she were a cuddly toy or a security blanket. You half expect him to start sucking his thumb or the corner of her coat.
If he’s allowed to travel alone, he’ll be reading Harry Potter or playing with his phone, spreadeagled like a giant baby in its cot, scratching his crotch and yawning so brazenly you fear being sucked into the gaping chasm of his mouth.
It’s not just young bucks. Men who would once have been called middle-aged are behaving like teenagers, faces nourished by some male consumer-targeted unction (because he’s worth it), huddled over their Nintendo Wii or iPhone, desperate to ignore the spectre of maturity tapping on their shoulder.
Once the hair starts to recede, the only concession is to shave it all off — leaving a greying-templed baby-man with a risibly-outsized watch on his ickle wrist, lager bottle in hand, clad in a T-shirt that declares Get Your Coat, You’ve Pulled and drop-crotch, half-mast trousers that render him incapable of doing anything but stumble about like a toddler. Be still, my beating heart.

Those who have acquiesced to their girlfriends’ demands and suddenly find themselves pushing a buggy fractionally smaller than a bus clearly struggle with their new role.
I recently shared a train carriage with a man who spent the entire 25-minute journey jangling an iPhone in the face of his bemused-looking baby. It wasn’t hard to see who was having more fun. Who’s the daddy?
Quite.
Just look at the success of the U.S. television series Mad Men. Aside from the sharp scripts and the faultless production values, what made it such a phenomenon?
Dare I suggest it was largely because it recalled a time when we still acknowledged a gender divide? When women were women, and men were men.
Call me old-fashioned, but can you imagine Don Draper on his daily commute, earphones plugged in, knees akimbo, playing virtual football on a Smartphone, pointedly ignoring the old lady teetering on a stick in front of him?
Which brings us to the golden age of Hollywood and the men who had studios chomping at the bit to sign them.
Would Ava Gardner have been irresistibly drawn to Frank Sinatra if she’d clocked him shuffling past in shorts and flip-flops, shouting ‘Laters!’ into his mobile?
Would Richard Burton have proved so addictive for Elizabeth Taylor if he were a simpering, feminised mess, confused about his place in the world?
I grew up in the Seventies and Eighties, daydreaming of a future husband with an air of actor Robert Mitchum about him. But today’s baby-men need their women to provide a shoulder to lean on, not the other way around.
The likes of James Stewart and Gregory Peck, while not overtly macho, could never have been accused of being juvenile or girly.

And even those whom some might regard as verging on camp — Monty Clift, James Dean, Dirk Bogarde — were butcher than many of today’s heterosexual men, despite being comfortable with expressing their emotions. Dean’s ‘You’re tearing me apart!’ was the howl of a wolf, not the bleat of a lamb.
These were real, red-blooded, grown-up men, whose turbo-charged testosterone made them the perfect foil to their glossy female co-stars.
Strong, dependable, loyal — at least until another more pneumatic dame caught their eye — they drove women wild with starry-eyed lust, making them weak at the knees and sparking some primal longing within the female breast, while giving male fans something, however unattainable, to aspire to.
With the exception of Colin Firth, who fills the Peck/Stewart gap, and Cary Grant’s successor, that old-school playboy George Clooney, today’s big-screen role models are all eternal ‘frat boys’.
Think of American actors Owen Wilson and Ashton Kuchter.
Ashton’s currently making headlines for allegedly cheating on his wife Demi Moore, a woman 15 years his senior. But the whole affair is being treated as if he’s a naughty schoolboy who’s disappointed his proud mum — not a man who’s betrayed his woman.
Maybe Ashton has decided he is finally ready to cut the apron strings and flee the maternal embrace? He should count himself lucky — not many thirtysomethings can afford to leave home these days. This, perhaps, explains a lot.
Women have a lot to thank feminist Germaine Greer’s The Female Eunuch for, but some lines have become catastrophically blurred since the Nineties rise of the Jack Daniel’s-swigging ladette.
Remember the boyband East 17? I think the rot might have set in there.
They looked like they had borrowed their big brothers’ clothes and crooned: ‘If you’ve got to go away, don’t think I can stand the pain.’ Just like a child to his mother on his first day at school.
What a weird century. We fret endlessly about little girls growing up too quickly, while men regress back to the womb.
Is it because in a society that’s all about boosting female confidence (‘Here come the girls!’), men are unsure of their role, ashamed of their testosterone?
No one’s saying everyone should conform to a gender stereotype, or that men should be ‘dissing’ their women like some caricature of male aggression.
But neither should masculinity be regarded as a dirty word.

Sarah Jessica Parker's Adorable Daughters First Day at Pre-School

Dressed in a black leggings, a little blue sweater, blue shoes and a turquoise flowered clip in her hair, Marion eagerly held onto the papers and appeared focused on the task at hand.
Sarah was dressed down for the outing, looking casual and comfortable.
The mother-of-three wore a pair of light blue jeans paired with a loose fitting tan coloured top and flat shoes, as she carried her daughter.
A nanny, who is often photographed with the Sex and the City star brought the other twin, Tabitha, along.

Tabitha looked just as adorable in a pink sweater, a striped blue and white shirt and a pink flower carefully clipped into her hair.
Sarah, who has often spoken of how different her two girls are, recently explained to Jonathan Ross the contrasts between the toddlers.
'They are spiritually, politically, physically, emotionally, ideologically... they are very, very, very different in every day,' she explained.

'I mean they don't even looked related. When we go outside, people think they are children that have made a play-date.'
She told the talk show host that one of her girls, Tabitha, looks more like her, and Marion resembles her husband Matthew Broderick more.
The couple's twins were born by surrogate mother Michelle Ross in an Ohio hospital in June 2009.

Kim Kardashian Accentuates Her Famous Rear in Curve-Boosting Dress

So it's no wonder Kim Kardashian tries to draw attention to her rear at every possible opportunity.
And when the 30-year-old reality star stepped out in Calabasas, California, yesterday, she highlighted her shapely behind in a curve-boosting white dress.

The bubble shape of the skirt made Kim's derriere look even bigger than usual, while the nipped-in waist also drew attention to her feminine figure.
Kim donned the dress as she headed to tape interviews on the Ellen DeGeneres Show and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno alongside husband Kris Humphries.
But, as she arrived for her Leno interview, Kim clearly decided that her outfit wasn't suitable for the small screen.

She then changed into a white dress printed with musical notes, which she had recently worn on the cover of Harper's Bazaar Asia.
Kris was also dressed to impress and looked dapper in a three-piece suit as the couple headed to a waiting car hand-in-hand.
The Kim Kardashian wedding special will air over two nights on E!, starting on Sunday.

Viewers can expect to see all the drama of the Big Day unravel before their eyes.

She said her late father, Robert, once hired a professional make-up artist to teach her and her sisters how to do their own.
'My dad - when we were 14 - got us make up lessons for Christmas and had us videotape them and had a real-life person do our make up and teach us how to wear
Make up,' she said of the experience she had with her sisters Kourtney and Khloe.
Kim told Radar Online that her father knew his daughters were going to start wearing make up and wanted them to look presentable.
'It was really cool and we have turned out to be the biggest trannies because of it,' she shared.
Khloe Kardashian who is just as famous for her flawless complexion as sister Kim, said: 'We joke and say that we are like trannies because we love hair and make up. I don't think we necessarily need it, but we love it.'
Khloe who was interviewed with Kim, said of her younger older sister 'Kim definitely if you take off what's on her face, her face is the exact same.
'She doesn't need it, it's just a mind thing to her. She really doesn't need any of that on her face.'

Kim who doesn't hide her love of make up, hit back at the people who tell her to tone down her look, 'We had publicists and people who would tell us, "Girls, tone it down. Stop wearing all the makeup."'
But then we would read on our blogs - like in the comments and everything - and everyone was like, 'What lipstick is this, what mascara do you use?'
'We were like, 'We love make-up, so why try and be what we're not?'
Kourtney was also spotted today with son Mason Disick and boyfriend Scott as they left their New York hotel.
She and Kim and filming their spin-off show there, Kourtney & Kim Take New York.

Andie MacDowell at Footloose Premiere

There's a 30 year age gap between them.
But Andie MacDowell, 53, certainly gave her youthful co-star Julianne Hough, 23, a good run for her money at the premiere of Footloose last night.
Both ladies slipped into standout red ensembles as they put their best foot forward and stepped into the spotlight at the Los Angeles event.
Country music singer Hough, a former Dancing With The Stars professional, donned a bright red playsuit while Andie - who plays her onscreen mother - went for a darker shade of rouge in a knee-length dress.
But while Julianne put her perfectly honed legs on show, it was Andie who upped the ante in the cleavage department in her plunging number.
Hough - who dates American Idol host Ryan Seacrest - posed with her male lead Kenny Wormald for photographers.

Wormald's role was original given to High School Musical star Zac Efron - but he quit the project in 2009, more than a year after signing up.
After much speculation, Wormald was finally announced as his replacement, with Gossip Girl's Chace Crawford among the other names touted
Footloose, which is set for release in the U.S. on October 14, is a remake of the 1984 dance movie.
It was filmed over two months in Georgia between September and November 2010.
The film follows the story of city kid Ren McCormack (Wormald) on his move from Boston to old fashioned Bomont, where he rebels against its law that bans dancing and rock music.
Footloose is released in cinemas in the U.S. on October 14.
